We offer a fantastic training experience, working with high quality lawyers in a friendly environment. Our overall aim is to give our trainees a good variety of quality work so that they develop their legal skills and find the practice area that best suits their skills and interests.

A normal training contract with us will comprises four ‘seats’, with each one lasting six months.

You will be based in our Lancaster office, undertaking the four six month seats. While trainees are allocated to our Lancaster office there may be an opportunity and, depending upon circumstances, an expectation that you might spend some time in our Kirkby Lonsdale office.

Time will be spent in a mix of Agriculture, Corporate, Commercial and Residential Property, Litigation, Family and Private Client. From the beginning of your training programme, we hope you will be surprised at the degree of direct contact you can have with our clients.

Standard Application Requirements

Minimum 2:1 Law Degree (or predicted)

LPC

If you have already completed your LPC with Distinction, we would encourage you to apply for our four seat training programme.

SQE

We will accept candidates for QWE:

• Who have passed SQE1 and SQE2;

• Who have passed SQE1; and

• Who are currently enrolled on an SQE1 preparation course.

Our trainees need to have good interpersonal skills, common sense, and the ability to work in a team and under their own initiative. In that way we are similar to every other law firm to which you have also applied; where we are different is we appreciate that Oglethorpe Sturton & Gillibrand is the sum of its parts and we recognise that as a trainee and beyond you will have a major role to play in our future success. So what we are interested in about you, over and above the usual, is the diversity of experience, strengths and talents you can bring to the firm to ensure we can continue to offer our clients the very best legal talent giving the very best legal advice. During each seat, our trainees have regular review meetings and an end of seat review with their supervisor ensuring they receive regular, constructive feedback on their progress.

In relation to your final seat, we will seek to establish your preference for qualification and, where possible, will arrange your last seat accordingly. We aim to promote details of newly qualified positions in advance of final decisions being made.

We know taking on a training contract is a big commitment for the trainee and the firm, we like to give our trainees an opportunity to get to know us before committing to a training contract. We like our trainees to start with us on a twelve month paralegal contract before the training begins. This twelve month paralegal contract does not count towards QWE.
