Oglethorpe Sturton & Gillibrand’s footballers braved the rain on Monday evening to take part in Lloyds’ charity 5-a-side tournament alongside other local professionals.

There was a friendly, but competitive atmosphere as the teams lined up against each other at the University of Cumbria. The tournament was played in two group stages, with the top two from each group going forward to the semi-final and final stages.

Against strong opposition, and in difficult conditions, our team struggled in their group losing 3-0, 1-0, drawing 1-1 and then finishing with a 3-0 defeat. Solicitor and ‘non-footballer’ Charlotte Russell scored our only goal of the tournament, successfully transferring her hockey goal poaching skills to the football pitch.

Despite the weather and results not going our way, ‘Team OSG’ persevered and can be proud of the effort they put in. After our earlier than planned exit, we enjoyed watching some good football in the semi-finals and final, with our friends at Burton & Fisher coming through as worthy winner. Be warned though, Team OSG will be back with a vengeance next year!
